Ingredients
- 2 large cucumbers
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp white vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1–2 cloves garlic, finely grated
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½ tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- Black pepper, to taste
Method
- Slice the cucumbers very thinly—a mandoline works beautifully.
- Toss with the salt and let sit for 20–30 minutes.
- Squeeze the cucumbers firmly to remove excess liquid.
- Mix vinegar, sugar, garlic, sour cream, and black pepper.
- Toss the cucumbers with the dressing and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Before serving, sprinkle generously with sweet Hungarian paprika.
Traditional touch: Some Hungarian families skip the sour cream and serve the cucumber in a simple vinegar-sugar-garlic dressing, then add sour cream on top. Thinly sliced onion is also a common addition.
